Excerpt from Chapter 2: A Severe Blessing: Mary, Mother of Jesus:

This day doesn’t seem real.

But he told me this day would come.

I stood there with John and the other women, watching my son die. He didn’t even look human; his face was caked in blood, contorted; he was writhing in pain.

I knew the traditions of my people. I was supposed to be wailing and dramatic.

But he had told me this day would come. And I had been warned long before that; it had been the old man Simeon who said, “A sword will pierce you very soul,” when Yeshua was just a baby. I didn’t really understand. Now I stood silently, still not really able to understand. Today, I was feeling the sword.

His eyes suddenly met mine; he nodded his head slightly. “It’s okay, Mama; it’ll all be okay.”

That boy. He had done that since he was a child; his voice was in my head as clearly as if he had said the words out loud.

It had been a strange journey with this one.

But it was wonderful too.
