Christian Response to DOGE and Elon, Pt. 2
Today we continue the discussion focusing on the problems with Executive Orders. (To see the video version click here)
George Washington’s Executive Orders?
Yep, he had a few. One of them had to do with the type of China (formal dining dishes) to be used at official functions. So yes, they do have a long history.
But what has concerned constitutional scholars in the past few decades is the number of Executive Orders being issued. They were not formally numbered until 1907, but American presidents throughout our history have used them, some copiously.
Thomas Jefferson issued four.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was super-busy. He issued 3,721!
Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were pretty similar, with 381 and 364 respectively.
What is an Executive Order for?
A primary job of the Chief Executive of the United States is to ensure the laws passed by Congress are faithfully carried out.
Also, every elected and appointed member of the Federal government has a responsibility to seeing that the Constitution is honored.
In that vein, the Executive order (EO) is supposed to be for the purpose of carrying out laws enacted by Congress. Vitally important, however, is that those laws do not violate Constitutional principle.
Obviously DOGE and Elon Musk cannot issue Executive Orders. DOGE and Elon are just an advisory board serving the President.
President Trump is hitting the ground running with EOs’. Each one should be directed toward seeing that the laws passed by Congress are faithfully carried out while honoring the Constitution fully.
The Elephant in the Room
While many are claiming, as mentioned in Part 1, that there is a Constitutional Crisis being caused by DOGE and Elon–and concurrently with Trump’s EOs’, let’s look at the big picture.
Decades before President Trump took office, we had a Constitutional Crisis.
Long before DOGE and Elon were even thought of, the United States had a Constitutional Crisis.
Why are certain people crying about it now?
Well, for some who truly care about the Constitution, they have always been trying to warn us of the horrible consequences of the abuses of our primary governing document.
No one wanted to hear it, though.
For those currently using their bully pulpits to scream about DOGE and Elon (as well as the President), think about their likely motives.
I point out in my book Superhero: Being Who God Says You Are that only God truly knows the motives of our heart. We might think we know our own, but we are so capable of delusion and self-rationalization that our own judgment is clouded.
We can perceive possible motives in others, but we must be humble. We cannot know for sure the motives of those crying Constitutional “foul” in this present issue.
But given what DOGE and Elon have already discovered in terms of horrifying waste and profiteering by members of Congress, government agencies, and their cronies–we can confidently know where the true Constitutional Crisis lies.
Funding Terror and Personal Gain
It is absolutely clear that Congress has been grossly abusing the public trust by voting themselves and those connected with our government at any level massive amounts of money.
It is done in the name of education, foreign aid, charity, defense, energy, and nearly always under the abuse of the term “general welfare.”
So far through DOGE and Elon’s audit, taxpayer money has gone to individuals such as George Soros, who works tirelessly to eliminate the United States as a nation. He envisions borderless nations ruled by one government.
That’s a horrible idea. Anyone who has seriously studied history knows the predictable tragedies that arise from large centralized governance. You need to look no further than the history of the Catholic church to see the problem.
When the large “center” of governance become corrupt, all within that sphere suffer.
With individual states and nations, corruption is more likely to be contained.
Charity or Theft? USAID
USAID, a program of “charity” in the federal government, was discovered by DOGE and Elon to have a fraud rate of around 93%!
Do understand that nowhere in the Constitution is there a provision for “charity.” This is simply because with tax dollars charity is impossible.
It is not the Federal government’s role to take money from you and I and to voluntarily give it on our behalf. Only we, the “we the people” who are the government, can decide who is worthy of our “charity.”
Charity given through USAID (that 7% of the total budget) is an unconstitutional theft. Should Christian agencies seek or accept money stolen from those who do not approve of the cause we represent?
Personally, I could not do that any more than I could accept money from a sex-trafficker given to “help” Christian ministry.
Unpacking DOGE and Elon
Yes, I have concerns about the whole process.
But at the same time, this time in history could be our one shot at preserving the preamble to the Constitution.
If “we the people” understand that we were already in the middle of a disastrous Constitutional Crisis long before President Trump took office, we have made the most important first step.
Our elected (and unelected) Federal officials have been leading future generations of Americans (called “Posterity” in the Preamble to the Constitution) into a future of financial slavery. That is the ultimate Constitutional violation–and we are not even out of the first paragraph of our common charter!
We must do our part as Christians to monitor the situation going forward. We can hope that President Trump and his team, including DOGE and Elon, will correct the gross abuse of public funds as well as the anti-American usurpation of power that has been happening for decades.
Be in prayer. There will be an epic battle over this as the administration derails the gravy train for some and frustrates the unbridled lust for power for others.
In the process, pray that the administration will not fall into the very same sins they are currently fighting.
